Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a therapeutic method of supporting the body’s own systems to help access its natural healing processes. Within Chinese medicine we describe it as a method for rebalancing the flow of Qi & Blood, addressing imbalances in Yin & Yang, & harmonising the body’s internal systems. Disruption or imbalances in these areas are believed to lead to pain, discomfort & illness. By stimulating specific points on the body with very fine needles, heat or pressure we are able to support your body in restoring & maintaining balance.

Scientific research over the past few decades has correlated the concepts of Qi, acupuncture points & channels to nerve transmissions, connective tissue planes & metabolic mechanisms associated with hormones, neurotransmitters & nutrients. So, in terms of physiology & biochemistry, acupuncture has been shown to stimulate nerve fibres that send specific signals to particular parts of your brain via certain nerve system pathways. In doing so, it sends signals that enable your brain to identify the imbalance & initiate its self-regulating biochemical functions.

Moxibustion

Used for centuries, moxibustion (moxa) is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that involves burning the herb mugwort on or near the skin at specific acupuncture points & along channels to stimulate the flow of Qi & blood. The heat from burning moxa helps to warm & tonify, as well as lead Qi & Blood to areas of the body that need balancing.

There are two main types of moxibustion: direct, where moxa is placed on the skin, & indirect, where moxa is burned near the skin, often in the form of a moxa stick or applied to acupuncture needles. Moxibustion is intricately connected with acupuncture & is commonly used alongside it to enhance its therapeutic effects.

Evidence-based research is uncovering that the thermal stimulation produced by moxibustion may elicit an array of biochemical reactions that could have the capacity to enhance immune factors, regulate inflammatory factors, strengthen gut peristalsis & modulate cellular development.

Flame Cupping

Cupping therapy involves placing heated cups on the skin to create a localised suction that pulls the skin & underlying tissue into the cup. The process gently separates the soft tissue layers drawing blood & toxins into the interstitial layers.

Why do we use this technique?

In Chinese medicine, we use it as a method to break up stagnation, allowing for free-flow of Qi & blood. It has many benefits including aiding in pain relief, increasing blood flow to an area, stimulating the immune system, supporting our lymphatic system in detoxification, reducing muscle tension, & promoting relaxation & stress reduction.

By promoting blood flow to the treated area, it enhances the delivery of nutrients & oxygen to the tissues whilst facilitating the removal of metabolic waste. This process supports our body’s innate healing mechanisms.
